Cambodia’s E-Commerce Landscape: Social Media as a Key Driver

Cambodia’s e-commerce market is expanding, with the Ministry of Commerce projecting it to reach USD 1.78 billion in 2025, up from USD 1.51 billion in 2024. This reflects a compound annual growth rate of 17.88%.

Role of Social Media in Digital Adoption

Over 72% of Cambodians actively use social media platforms, which serve as the main point of internet access for many. Facebook remains the most widely used platform, with 11.65 million users and a 10.3% increase in potential advertising reach between January 2024 and 2025. TikTok has 10.7 million users, aged 18 and above, while Instagram and LinkedIn report 1.65 million and 780,000 users, respectively.

Platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and Telegram are commonly used for online selling. This approach has gained traction in part due to the limited development of formal e-commerce infrastructure.

Digital Payments and Spending Trends

QR code payments now account for 47.15% of transactions, followed by cash (26.5%) and mobile money (13.3%).

ABA Bank holds the largest share in digital payment usage at 46.89%, followed by ACLEDA Bank (30.90%) and Wing Bank (17.02%).

Most consumer transactions fall within the USD 11–50 range. Fashion products represent the largest share of purchases (23%), followed by food and beverages (20%), beauty and personal care (19%), and electronics (14%).

Infrastructure and Government Support

The country recorded 21.9 million mobile subscriptions and the same number of internet users in 2024, reflecting high connectivity levels. Government initiatives such as the Cambodia Digital Economy and Society Policy Framework (2021–2035), e-commerce legislation, and simplified VAT registration processes are in place to support the sector’s development.

Ongoing Challenges and Emerging Opportunities

Despite growth, Cambodia’s e-commerce sector remains relatively early in its development. Many consumers continue to shop from international platforms such as Taobao and Lazada, with fewer purchases made through local providers. This has contributed to increased activity in the delivery and logistics sector, with local operators such as Loda and ZTO expanding services. E-commerce currently contributes 6.68% to Cambodia’s GDP and holds a 1.3% share of the ASEAN e-commerce market, which is projected to grow from USD 116.36 billion in 2024 to USD 137.24 billion by 2025. Broader smartphone adoption and the increasing use of “Buy Now, Pay Later” services are expected to support further development, alongside the role of financial institutions and continued implementation of digital policies.
